Vipp Lamps

In 1932, Holger Nielsen won a car on his ticket to the local football stadium, and that was where Vipp began. He just didn’t know it.

He sold the car and bought a metal press, and a few years later, when his wife Marie needed a bin for her salon, he walked into his workshop and made what we now know as the Vipp pedal bin.

Over time, this has expanded to a vast portfolio of tools, kitchens, bathrooms, furnishings, and lamps.

Vipp is still a family-owned, independent Danish design firm run by Holger’s daughter Jette Egelund, her two children Kasper and Sofie, and 45 employees in Copenhagen.

Regardless of whether the project is to make a metal bin, rethink the modular, free-standing kitchen, develop a furniture collection, or create Vipp Hotel, the quality of the products and concepts are measured against their long-term ability to cultivate a unique experience.

In 2009, the pedal bin became part of the permanent design collection at MoMA in New York—the only place in the world where the pedal bin is purely decorative.
