2020 was the year everyone discovered working from home. Lockdown meant that many of us dusted off the old ‘computer room’ and realised how important a good work environment is to productivity and comfort—and you can’t talk about work environments without mentioning light and lamps!

Choose the right desk lamp

When it comes to picking a lamp for your desk, you should consider what you want in terms of features—brightness, temperature, model, design, and other functionalities. Read more about how to pick the perfect lamp that fulfils all your requirements.

  • Brightness and temperature - In a cosy office where you spend an hour or two on a Saturday evening, a comfortable, dimmed, and warm light is fine. But if you spend your days working on your computer, we recommend a lamp that mimics the temperature of daylight. Go for cold light!

  • Lamp type - There’s a reason the architect lamp has become synonymous with a desk lamp. With its adjustable head and body, the agile lamp is perfect for paperwork, and the classic design is available in a wealth of elegant shapes. The directional light is genius for lighting up a keyboard or a document, but if you mainly work on your computer, you should consider a wider light.

  • Design - We spend more time by our computers than ever before, so it’s important to pick a lamp that truly deserves a spot on your desk. Make sure to pick a lamp that you think is pretty, which makes you smile before you even turn it on. If your décor is classic, a super modern desk lamp can be a statement piece that provides a stunning contrast. If your surroundings are very modern, on the other hand, then a timeless classic can frame your décor in a whole new way.

  • Other functionalities - Once upon a time, everything your smartphone can do took up an entire shelf—and as our cameras, computers, phones, music players, internet connections, water levels, and GPS have become available on a single smart device, more objects in our lives are starting to serve multiple purposes. Consider if you want your lamp to do more than just shine. There are desk lamps with wireless phone chargers, air meters, and smart lighting technology.

Once you’ve chosen a lamp, you just need to figure out where you want it! We recommend placing it behind your computer. Another good tip for the righthanded people out there is to place it on the left side of your desk. That way, you don’t get shadows every time you move the mouse, and the light doesn’t disturb your main eye.

Make sure the light respects the natural progression of daylight to avoid contrasts. In the evening, you can combine your desk lamp with a ceiling light or other ambient light to create a baseline in the room that works for your desk lamp.
