Herman Miller Lamps

The American brand Herman Miller has more than 100 years’ worth of experience with interior design and production. The brand took off in the 1950s and the first lighting solution was produced by the Chief of Design around the same time, resulting in the Bubble collection by George Nelson.

The brand has been focused on furniture since the beginning. Their office furniture is world-famous and synonymous with ergonomic, innovative design. Throughout their history of manufacturing quality furniture, the brand has collaborated with various design icons, including the American duo, Charles and Ray Eames. The duo’s designer furniture is distributed by Vitra, otherwise known as Herman Miller’s European partners. While this collaboration might still be the most famous, the Bubble lamps really ought to be attracting the same amount of attention. The lamps are exceptional representations of American modernism.

Bubble lamp

George Nelson designed the Bubble lamps in response to the demand for mass production. The goal was clear—the collection was intended to be a commercial success. For that reason, it was vital that the design lent itself well to efficient production, in order to keep costs down and reach a wider audience. Not only did the brand succeed in creating a collection that the industry quickly took to manufacturing, but the design was also special. The aesthetic of the lamps was intended to satisfy the demands of the wider audience.

As a result of this ambitious goal, the lamp was made using an inner steel construction and coated with a thin layer of plastic. This design continues to characterise the lamps to this day. The design is both beautiful and practical—it ticks all the modernist boxes.
