Muuto – 20 years of new perspectives

Scandinavian design is not an aesthetic. It is a way of thinking.

For over a hundred years, generations of designers have returned to the same values: honest forms, a function that arises from everyday life, and a deep respect for material, craftsmanship, and durability.

On this foundation, Muuto was founded in Copenhagen twenty years ago - with the claim to not just repeat this attitude but to carry it forward. The name is derived from the Finnish muutos: new perspective. The past is not something to copy but something to build upon.

At its core is the conviction that design arises from heart and mind. Some things have to be felt - the weight of a material, the softness of an edge, the atmosphere of a room. Other things can be measured: proportion, ergonomics, construction, durability. This balance is embodied by lights like Ambit by TAF Studio, Unfold by Form Us With Love, or Under the Bell (see image) by Iskos-Berlin. The same attitude is found in accessories - vases, bowls, baskets, and textiles that add warmth and character to a room without overloading it.

For the anniversary, Muuto is less focused on where the brand comes from and more on what comes next. In an increasingly digital world, this means creating real, physical experiences that invite presence, calm, and genuine closeness.

Twenty years. And still curious.
