Lampe Gras 322 XL pendant light – a timeless classic with a natural patina

The 322 XL pendant light combines Lampe Gras’s characteristic design language with a generous, conical shape. Its striking lampshade makes it an expressive light source above dining tables, kitchen islands or spacious living and working areas.

The origins of the Lampe Gras series date back to 1922, when Bernard-Albin Gras developed the first designs for his functional lights. Originally conceived for offices and industrial spaces, the series was characterised by its simple, robust and, at the same time, ergonomic design. The basic construction was realised without screws or welded joints.

The design of the individual details – such as the arms, bodies, fittings and joints – testifies to an extraordinary level of thoughtfulness. Functionality and aesthetics combine to create a design language that was far ahead of its time.

Le Corbusier was an early admirer of the modern design of the Lampe Gras and used the lights in his projects. Today, the models are highly sought-after design classics and collectors’ items worldwide, particularly in France, the USA and Japan.

In the raw copper finish, the lampshade is left untreated and is initially supplied in a polished state. The characteristic patina only develops after unpacking, through contact with air and the respective environmental influences. Humidity, temperature and the surroundings influence the speed and colour nuances of the oxidation process.

After around 14 days, the first signs of the copper darkening may become visible. Over time, the surface changes naturally and develops its own distinctive raw copper look. If you wish to speed up the oxidation process, you can place the lampshade outdoors in the shade for a few days, ensuring it is protected.
