The PH Artichoke was designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958. He was commissioned to design a hanging light for the Langelinie Pavilions in Copenhagen that would be completely glare-free. His ingenious solution was to arrange 72 leaves in 12 rows, thereby creating a light that provides glare-free illumination from every angle.
The hanging light is now regarded as an icon. It is famous throughout the world and still hangs in the pavilions in Copenhagen. The PH Artichoke is also known as ‘Kögl’ (‘the cone’), named after its distinctive appearance.
The lamp is a fine example of Poul Henningsen’s visionary approach, which focused on the effect of light on its surroundings, quite apart from his keen sense of aesthetics. Although it was designed over 60 years ago, the hanging light remains as popular as ever. With its sculptural design and pleasant light – not to mention the growing interest in Danish classics – the lamp is an excellent addition to a modern interior.
The lamp is available in various sizes, with diameters ranging from 48 to 84 cm, and in a wide range of colours.
