IP codes and safety

What’s an IP code?

The IP (Ingress Protection) code tells consumers two things:

1. How secure the lamp is against intrusion of solids and liquids.

2. How secure the lamp is in terms of the user being able to touch dangerous components.

The IP code consists of 2 numbers – for example IP44.

The first number represents protection against solid objects as well as user safety

0 = no protection

1 = protected against objects of Ø50 mm or larger, and effective against large surfaces of the body, i.e. the back of the hand

2 = protected against objects of Ø12.5 mm or larger, and effective against fingers or similar

3 = protected against objects of Ø2.5 mm or larger, and effective against tools, thick wires, etc.

4 = protected against objects of Ø1 mm or larger, and effective against most wires, thin screws, large ants, etc.

5 = protected against dust

6 = dust-tight

The second number represents protection against water

0 = not protected

1 = protected against dripping water

2 = protected against dripping water when tilted at 15°

3 = protected against spraying water/rain

4 = protected against splashing water

5 = protected against jets of water

6 = protected against strong jets of water

7 = protected against immersion, up to 1 m depth

8 = protected against immersion, 1 m depth or more

Outdoor lamps - the second number should be 1, 3 or 4.

Lamps for damp areas – the second number should be 1.

Lamps for wet areas – the second number should be 4.
