Shoichi Uchiyama etablished his own firm Shoichi Uchiyama Design Office in 1977. His specialty was lightning design. He is very inspired by minimalist Japanese aesthetics, and his design viewpoint is rigorous and functional.  

He has been awarded for his designs numerous times and has created many exciting objects. In 1985 he won the German Design Award and in 2006 he received two awards for his Enigma lamps for Danish producer Louis Poulsen.

The Enigma series is, according to the designer himself, an attempt to achieve a soft non-blinding light and comfortable light, with varying light intensity, that provides a feeling of well-being.
